What is ODP?

US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) is a national identification, selection and development program founded in 1977.  Through ODP, players are invited to represent their state associations (sometimes called “state teams”), regions (“regional teams”) and the United States youth national teams.  Each state association holds ODP try-outs annually.  States select players based upon a combination of try-outs, scouting and recruiting.  All state ODP teams compete in a regional ODP Championship Tournament in January.   At this tournament, players are identified for possible regional team and national team pool invitations

The benefits to a player participating in ODP are:

  1. Development as a player and the opportunity to play with the strongest players in one’s age group.
  2. Training and instruction from nationally licensed coaches.
  3. High-level competition against other state ODP teams.
  4. Exposure to regional and national team coaches.
  5. The opportunity to represent your region or country in competitions
  6. Exposure to college coaches.

In the years past, the best players from Northern Nevada have been encouraged to attend try-outs for Nevada ODP teams.  Many of our areas best players have been selected to Nevada ODP pools and been successful in the regional tournaments over the years.  However, because most of the Nevada ODP training is based in Southern Nevada (Las Vegas area), the cost, time and travel required are obstacles to our players participation.

In 2018 we launched Northern Nevada ODP.  The goal of Northern Nevada ODP, is to provide our area’s most talented players opportunities for development and competition at a higher-level without the burden of a 7 hour drive or air travel to Southern Nevada for training.  Northern Nevada ODP is based in Reno-Sparks area and training for the players invited to Northern Nevada ODP pools will also be located in the Reno-Sparks area.  Northern Nevada ODP teams will compete in the West Region ODP Championships the following January.

After the ODP Championships held January 2019, 67 of our Northern Nevada ODP players were identified and invited to attend USYS Regional Camp in July 2019.

After the ODP Championships held January 2020, 68 of our Northern Nevada ODP players were identified and invited to attend USYS Regional Camp in July 2020.

Northern Nevada ODP is completely club and league neutral.  Players from every local league and team are encouraged and welcome to participate in Northern Nevada ODP.  A player does not need permission from a team coach or their league to participate in Northern Nevada ODP.  We invite the areas best coaches, from all our leagues and teams to be a part of this program and asking all our leagues, clubs and soccer organizations to help promote and support the program.  A strong, well supported Northern Nevada ODP will not only benefit those players and coaches that participate directly in the team pools, but also indirectly benefit all their club teams and their club teammates as our players return from ODP events having been challenged at a higher-level and raising the level of play across Northern Nevada.
